April 26, 2017 - Each month throughout the coming months, M.T.H. will be spotlighting various items from our 2017 O Gauge Volume 1 catalog. Each of these items are currently slated to begin delivering in June 2017.

Amtrak Genesis Diesel Locomotive - By the late 1980's, Amtrak was searching for a replacement for its outdated and aging fleet of F40PH and GP-40s. Weary of getting more locomotives that were really designed for freight operation, Amtrak searched for a new, lightweight, high-tech alternative. General Electric provided Amtrak with an answer with its unveiling of the "Genesis." Featuring a monocoque frame, advanced electronics, and special environmental and safety features, the Genesis represents the state-of-the-art in U.S. passenger service.  continue reading

4-4-0 General Steam Locomotive - Just four years after the war that nearly tore the nation apart, the fledgling railroad industry helped bind it together again. On May 10, 1869, at Promontory Summit, Utah Territory, with the gentle tapping of four precious metal spikes into a laurelwood tie, the first transcontinental railroad was completed. Perhaps in reference to the Civil War, the official Golden Spike was engraved, "May God continue the unity of our country as the railroad unites the two great Oceans of the world."           continue reading EMD SD45 Diesel Locomotive - Like the Pontiac GTO, the SD45 was a mid-60s General Motors muscle car. Stuffed under its brick-like hood was the largest diesel motor made up to that time, a turbo-charged, 20-cylinder, 3600 hp, Electro-Motive Division model 645E. The Great Northern took delivery of the first SD45 in May of 1966 and promptly painted the nickname "Hustle Muscle" on its flanks. The name said it all: the SD45 was heavy freight power, intended for long trains and high speeds.  continue reading

3-Car Overton Passenger Sets - RailKing Overton Passenger Cars are the perfect complement for any 19th century or earlier steam era locomotive. Configured in 3-car coach sets, each features car interior detail, overhead interior lighting, end-of-car diaphragms and intricate under-car detail. All configurations are mounted atop die-cast metal 4-wheel trucks with operating metal couplers, metal wheels and metal axles.     continue reading Gondola Car w/ScaleTrax Crossover - On its customer Web site, the Union Pacific Railroad characterizes a gondola as an "extremely sturdy open design" for carrying "rugged unfinished commodities"; its "large flat interior design with side walls" is described as "more flexible than a flat car." These qualities make the modern gondola particularly popular with the steel industry, for transportation of loose materials like scrap metal, waste, coke, and slag as well as finished products like iron or steel plate, pipe, structural steel, and rails for railroad track.

Standard Tank Car - The tank car was relatively uncommon until the 1870s, when the nascent petroleum industry ordered large quantities of metal tanks carried on wooden car bodies. By the early 1900s, a standard design had evolved that lasted throughout the steam and early diesel eras: an 8,000-11,000 gallon metal tank perched on a metal flatcar-like underframe.     continue reading 19th Century Reefer - The coming of the railroad changed the way America ate and drank. Before the iron horse connected every town of any importance to the outside world, most food was grown or produced locally. The arrival of cheap, fast, refrigerated transport — in the form of the woodsided reefer with ice bunkers at each end — enabled local brewers, diaries, meat processors, and other food businesses to become players on a national scale.   continue reading

Each of the above RailKing items can be ordered through any M.T.H. Authorized Retailer.
