Premier O Scale E-8 Diesel Locomotives Now In Stock

Check Out It Out In Action In All-New Video

March 31, 2020 - M.T.H. Electric Trains has released its 2019 Volume 2 Premier Line E-8 diesel locomotives in five different roadnames. In addition to the New York Central scheme featured in the above image, four other railroads are represented in the 2019 Volume 2 catalog including Rock Island; EMD; Pennsylvania; and Santa Fe. Each of these locomotives is now in-stock and available for immediate delivery.

About the E-8 Diesel

In the mid-1930s, as the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors was trying to interest railroads in diesel passenger power, there was a lot of experimentation in exterior design. Looking at EMD’s worm-like yellow and brown Union Pacific M-10000, its gleaming stainless steel Burlington Zephyr, or the boxy, just-plain-ugly early Santa Fe units, it’s apparent that here was a new function looking for its form. The first generation of road diesels found its form in 1937 when the initial E-units, built for the B&O, inaugurated the classic "covered wagon" cab unit design that would last for two decades on both freight and passenger diesels.

The earliest E-units were each virtually custom-made, with less than 20 units produced of models EA through E5. The prewar E6 was the first mass-produced passenger diesel and the last to sport the rakish, streamlined EMD nose so characteristic of the 1930s. After the war, the new E7 adopted the "bulldog" nose introduced earlier on the FT freight diesel. With the rollout of the E8 in 1949, the E-unit, America’s most popular passenger diesel, reached its final visual form — just in time for the last hurrah of the American passenger train. With twin motors to ensure reliability and six-wheel trucks that rode like a Cadillac, the E8 was an engineer’s dream. For hoggers who had not long ago worked in steam locomotives, the clean cab of an E-unit with its lofty, panoramic view of the road ahead was not hard to get used to.

These locomotives are still available from your local M.T.H. Authorized Retailer. They can also be ordered from the M.T.H. online store by clicking on the item number when you go to any of the following links: New York Central; Rock Island; EMD; Pennsylvania; and Santa Fe.

Order The Spring 2020 Special TCA York Car Before They Sell Out

April 1, 2020 - M.T.H. Electric Trains has announced its 35th TCA York Show collector boxcar. Normally this car would only be sold to attendees at the TCA York Show in York, Pennsylvania. However, this month's show has been canceled due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Like the previous 34 cars sold in the York Car series, the latest edition will again be a Premier Line model and the second car in our 40th Anniversary celebration.

Because the cars were produced prior to the York Show cancellation, we'll be offering the cars for sale on a first-come, first-served basis. These extremely limited cars will sell for $40.00 (plus $11.95 for shipping). Current MTHRRC Members can purchase the car for $35.00.

Interested MTHRRC and non-MTHRRC Members can place their orders by calling 410-381-2580 and connecting to the Sales Department.

Extended Vision Caboose - Before railroads, "caboose" referred to a small cookhouse on the deck of a sailing ship. Nobody knows for sure, but it was likely the 1850s before the first railroad caboose gave a train crew shelter from the weather. The Civil War-era marked the emergence of boxcar like cabin cars or conductor’s cars with side and perhaps end doors, windows, a heating and cooking stove, bunks, and roof lanterns to mark the end of the train.   continue reading
