Uncataloged O Scale Premier SD50 Diesel Locomotive Announced

August 20, 2024 - M.T.H. Electric Trains has announced an exclusive and uncataloged Premier Line O Scale SD50 Diesel Locomotive in Reading & Northern livery for exclusive distribution for M.T.H. Authorized Retailers E-Z Catch and Dixie Union Station. The locomotives will be available in two unique cab numbers and are slated to arrive in December 2024.

ABOUT THE PREMIER O SCALE SD50 DIESEL

EMD's "50 Series" diesel locomotives of the mid-1980s were the product of the most extensive testing in the company's 50-year history. Both the four-axle, four-motor GP50, and the six-axle, six-motor SD50 utilized a new control system that substantially increased hauling capacity and reduced engine noise levels.

The 3500 hp SD50 measured just 30" longer than the SD40-2 it replaced but differed substantially in appearance. Gone were the front and rear "porches" of the SD40-2 and the dynamic brake blisters on the sides of its hood. Under the SD50's longer hood, the dynamic brakes, which generate a lot of heat, were relocated from a position over the hot engine to a cleaner, cooler area just behind the cab.

The SD50 also introduced EMD's new "Super Series" control system, which included a radar unit for measuring true ground speed and electronic monitoring of the electrical equipment. A primary benefit of the new control system was its ability to maximize rail adhesion by automatically applying short bursts of sand as needed to maintain traction. The system allowed three SD50s to do the work of four older locomotives.

M.T.H. Electric Trains will be releasing the 2024 Premier O Scale Presidential Election Series Locomotives this Fall. Each of these offerings will promote both major party candidates and is expected to begin shipping to M.T.H. Authorized Retailers in December 2024.

Two locomotives will be released, including a Premier ES44 Diesel as part of the shared tooling arrangement with the Atlas Model Railroad Company. The ES44 will also feature a complementing Premier 50' PS-1 Box Car. The ES44 and PS-1 Box Car are both decorated in the Republican candidate's graphics.

A Premier AC6000 Diesel is the second locomotive model and will sport the colors of the Democratic candidate. Both locomotives feature Proto-Sound 3.0 and will include snippets of candidate speeches from the campaign trail.
