Monthly RailKing 2018 Volume 2 O Gauge Catalog Product Spotlight

September 26, 2018 - Each month throughout the year, M.T.H. will be spotlighting various items from our RailKing 2018 Volume 2 O Gauge Catalog.  This week's feature will focus on the RailKing EMD FP45 Diesel locomotive; the EMD F-3 ABA Diesel sets; the Pennsylvania Imperial 6-8-6 Turbine Passenger Set; Imperial 6-8-6 Turbine Steam Locomotive; and select RailKing rolling stock including the U.S. Army Flat Cars with military loads; and the Ore Car. Each of these items is currently slated to begin delivering in November 2018.

FP45 Diesel - Designed in 1967 at the request of the Santa Fe, the FP45 was basically an SDP45 road switcher with a streamlined cab unit body. The "P" in FP45 indicated a passenger diesel with a steam generator for train heat. Having a sleeker, more aerodynamic look than a road switcher, the FP45 blended better with its passenger consists; the fully enclosed body also reduced wind resistance and allowed the crew to perform troubleshooting and minor maintenance on the road.                   continue reading F-3 Diesel Sets - When the prototype railroads began to dieselize in the 1940s, model train manufacturers soon followed, recognizing that boys wanted models of the newest trains they were seeing on real railroads. One of the initial toy train forays into dieseldom was a Lionel replica of the best-selling diesel of the day, the F3 "covered wagon" made by the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors.         continue reading

Pennsylvania 6-8-6 Turbine Passenger Set - After battling its way westward over the Allegheny Mountains, the Pennsylvania Railroad’s mainline turned into a nearly straight and level raceway for the final dash to Chicago. In the waning days of steam, that 278-mile stretch from Crestline, Ohio to the Windy City was the scene of high drama, as the Pennsy and Baldwin Locomotive Works, its favored locomotive builder, tried in vain to resist the diesel revolution.                   continue reading 6-8-6 Imperial Steam Locomotive - The drive system that powered No. 6200 was both revolutionary — for a locomotive — and incredibly simple in concept. High-pressure boiler steam was used to spin a turbine wheel. The turbine was attached to a gear train that powered two of the engine’s four driver axles, and side rods transmitted power to the other two axles.           continue reading

U.S. Army Flats w/Military Loads - High quality, traditionally sized RailKing Freight Cars provide detailed bodies and colorful paint schemes for the O Gauge railroader. MTH makes an enormous variety of RailKing Freight Cars, including many different car types and roadnames. No matter what era or part of the country you are modeling, RailKing is sure to have something for you.                    continue reading Ore Car - Why are ore cars so short? Because the iron ore they carry is considerably heavier than typical hopper loads like coal, so a short car of ore fills the load capacity of its trucks. Ore cars, also called "jennies," were and still are a common sight in the Iron Range region of Minnesota and nearby states, where they shuttle between mines and Great Lakes ports.         continue reading
