Monthly RailKing 2019 Volume 2 O Gauge Catalog Product Spotlight

November 27, 2019 - Each month throughout the year, M.T.H. will be spotlighting various items from our RailKing 2019 Volume 2 O Gauge Catalog. This week's feature will focus on the RailKing 4-6-2 Imperial Pacific Steam Locomotive Passenger Sets in Chicago Great Western, Chessie, Milwaukee Road and Florida East Coast liveries; Alco PA Diesel Passenger Sets in Santa Fe, Lehigh Valley, Southern and Baltimore & Ohio liveries; and select RailKing freight cars including the 50' Double-Door Boxcar; Ore Car; 4-Bay Cylindrical Hopper; and 19th Century Reefer. Each of these items is currently slated to begin delivering in January 2020.



Chicago Great Western Pacific Passenger Set - The Pacific was the passenger locomotive of the early twentieth century. It was the next logical development of the turn-of-the-century 4-6-0 Ten Wheelers and 4-4-2 Atlantics. continue reading		Chessie Pacific Passenger Set - A four-wheel lead truck allowed the Pacific to track well at high passenger speeds and a two-wheel trailing truck supported a bigger firebox than was possible with an older 4-6-0. continue reading



Milwaukee Road Pacific Passenger Set - The first true Pacific, according to most accounts, was delivered in 1902 to the Missouri Pacific, hence the name Pacific. However, New Zealand Railways were credited with ordering the first Pacifics from Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1901, and claims the name derived from their subsequent shipment across the Pacific Ocean. continue reading		Florida East Coast Pacific Passenger Set - The 4-6-2 became the dominant North American passenger locomotive, with about 6800 engines built in the U.S. and Canada by 1930. Pick any name train of the 1920s or '30s and the chances are it was led by a Pacific where it remained the primary passenger hauler until the end of the steam era. continue reading

While Electro-Motive's E-units easily beat Alco's passenger engine in terms of popularity, the PA is widely regarded as the most beautiful first-generation diesel - period. continue reading		Lehigh Valley Alco PA Passenger Set - Perhaps no other locomotive looked so right at the head of the streamlined trains of the late forties and fifties that were the last hurrah of American long-distance passenger service. continue reading



Southern Alco PA Passenger Set - The 294 PA's and cabless PB's built between 1946 and 1953 powered some of the most famous name trains from coast to coast, from the Santa Fe's Super Chief to the New Haven's Merchants' Limited. continue reading		B&O Alco PA Passenger Set - The muscular PA profile and its elegant nose with the characteristic grille around the headlight were designed by Ray Patten of General Electric. At the time, GE and Alco were partners in the locomotive business, with GE making the electrical equipment for all Alco diesels. continue reading



50' Dbl. Door Boxcar - While usually referred to as an insulated boxcar, the prototype for this car, according to the Association of American Railroads (AAR), is technically a bunkerless refrigerator car, class RBL. continue reading		Ore Car - Why are ore cars so short? Because the iron ore they carry is considerably heavier than typical hopper loads like coal, so a short car of ore fills the load capacity of its trucks. continue reading



4-Bay Cylindrical Hopper - Until the advent of the covered hopper, bulk commodities like grain and cement were packed in sacks and loaded into boxcars.
