Alco S-2 Diesel - While Electro-Motive’s four-unit FT is often touted as "the diesel that did it" — vanquished the steam locomotive — it was the lowly switcher that launched the initial assault on steam and made the FT’s victory possible. The first commercially successful diesel-electric, Central of New Jersey No. 1000, was a 300 hp boxcab switcher; it came off the American Locomotive Company’s Schenectady, N.Y. erecting floor in 1925.       continue reading

Alco-GE-Ingersol Rand Box Cab - The 300 hp Alco-GE-Ingersoll Rand boxcab was the first production Diesel-electric produced in North America. General Electric had been experimenting with internal combustion rail power for nearly two decades when, in the mid-1920s, it formed a partnership with Ingersoll Rand and Alco to manufacture Diesel-electrics.                                                                     continue reading Flat Car w/Military Vehicle Loads - The flat car is perhaps the oldest of railroad cars, predating even the steam locomotive. From the very beginning, it was useful for commodities that could not have fit into a covered car. As far back as 1834, the horse-drawn Granite Railway in Quincy, Massachusetts ganged four of its four-wheel flatcars together to ship 60-ton granite blocks.                                                            continue reading

Husky Stack - On April 26, 1956, a revolution in shipping began when the first container ship, a converted oil tanker named Ideal X, left Port Newark, NJ headed for Houston. The brainchild of truck-driver-turned-shipping-magnate Malcolm Purcell McLean, containerization was a giant step forward in shipping efficiency, security and cost.

60' Flat Car w/Pipe Load - MTH Premier O Scale freight cars are the perfect complement to any manufacturer’s scale proportioned O Gauge locomotives. Whether you prefer to purchase cars separately or assemble a unit train, MTH Premier Rolling Stock has the cars for you in a variety of car types and paint schemes.                                                            continue reading

PS-2CD High-Sided Hopper - Although covered hoppers had achieved widespread use by the 1950s, it wasn’t until the following decade that they began to carry North America’s grain harvest. Prior to the mid-1960s, U.S. and Canadian farmers sent their wheat and other grains to market in 40’ box cars.

70-ton 3-Bay Hopper - Unlike equipment that carried a variety of loads, like boxcars, flatcars, and gondolas, this 3-bay hopper was designed specifically for one cargo: bituminous coal. Its capacity matched the volume of coal that a pair of typical 70-ton freight trucks could carry.                                                             continue reading
