ES44 Diesel - With a wave of consolidation behind it, North American railroading is once again a good business to be in. Freight traffic is booming. Locomotive orders are coming in at a record pace from the Big Seven roads that dominate rail transportation on the continent: Union Pacific, BNSF, CSX, Norfolk Southern, Canadian National, and Canadian Pacific. continue reading |

George Bush Funeral Train - On October 18, 2005, at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station, Texas, the Union Pacific Railroad unveiled locomotive 4141. It was only the sixth time in UP history that a diesel had been decorated in colors other than the road’s signature Armour Yellow paint. continue reading |

SD70ACe Diesel - Under the hood beats a third-generation model 710 diesel with 4300 horsepower; only slight modifications were needed to make the model 710 meet new emission standards. With 5000 such motors in service worldwide and a reputation for dependability, EMD reasoned that shop crews would prefer familiar technology. continue reading |

Center Cupola Steel Caboose - Like most pieces of railroad equipment, this caboose was shaped in part by regulatory requirements — in this case, a proposed Pennsylvania law requiring cabooses on through freights to be 8-wheeled and at least 24’ long. continue reading |

Coil Car - The coil car first appeared in the 1960s as a safer way to transport coiled sheet metal, usually steel, to manufacturers of stamped metal items from car parts to appliances. Prior to that, steel mills had often shipped out coiled metal in open gondolas, exposed to the elements and other sources of potential damage. continue reading |
