4-6-6-4 Challenger Steam Locomotive - The first Challengers were conceived in 1936 as fast freight engines to replace the Union Pacific's fleet of three-cylinder 4-12-2 locomotives. With an extra center cylinder for added power and a top speed of 45 mph, the 4-12-2s had been successful freight engines when built in 1926. But a decade later they were considered slow and difficult to maintain. So American Locomotive Works (Alco) was commissioned to build what became one of the most successful fleets of articulated engines on any railroad. Forty Challengers were built in the 1930s. The pressure of wartime traffic brought an order for 65 more with bigger tenders and many minor improvements.  continue reading

ES44 Diesel Locomotive - If you're a North American Class 1 railroad looking for a freight diesel today, there are only two main choices. EMD, newly independent and no longer a division of General Motors, offers the SD70ACe. The standard bearer for General Electric, the top seller of road freight diesels, is the Evolution Series ES44AC.           continue reading 3-Dome Tank Car - Three-dome tank cars were actually three complete tanks on a single car body. Each tank had its own end bulkheads and expansion dome. Since older tank cars were filled to the top of the tank to prevent fluids from sloshing around during shipment (which could make the car unsteady), the domes provided space for the cargo to expand when the sun heated the tank.  continue reading

Fire Car - High quality, traditionally sized RailKing Freight Cars provide detailed bodies and colorful paint schemes for the O Gauge railroader. MTH makes an enormous variety of RailKing Freight Cars, including many different car types and roadnames. No matter what era or part of the country you are modeling, RailKing is sure to have something for you.     continue reading Heavy Duty Snowplow - For railroads in much of the U.S. and Canada, dealing with snow is a perennial problem. The earliest railroad plows were likely derived from agricultural plows, and were the first instance of a plow being pushed from behind rather than pulled by horses or oxen. In 1840, little more than a decade after the first steam engine plied American rails, Charles Lowbaert was granted a patent for a wedge, or "bucker," railroad plow.
