Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 Big Boy Steam Locomotive  - Just months before Pearl Harbor, the American Locomotive Company delivered the first Big Boy to the Union Pacific Railroad. The UP's Department of Research and Mechanical Standards had designed the locomotive for a specific task: to pull a 3600-ton train unassisted over the Wasatch Mountains in Utah.                                        continue reading

Amtrak F59PHi Diesel Passenger Set - In 1988 Toronto-area commuter operator GO transit commissioned EMD to design a new commuter locomotive to replace the aging F40PH - which had been North America's standard passenger engine for more than a decade.                                        continue reading Sounder F59PHi Diesel Passenger Set - The new F59PH design incorporated a 3000 horsepower prime mover and a separate head end power (HEP) for car lighting, heat, and air conditioning. The new engine used 12 cylinders to produce the same horsepower as the '70s-era F40PH, and with lower emissions. continue reading

Metro Transit F59PHi Diesel Passenger Set - On the exterior, however, the F59new locomotive didn't look like a new passenger engine; it had the boxy, muscular look of a freight hauler.

VO-1000 Diesel Locomotive  - The Baldwin Locomotive Works had been building steam engines for a century before it sold its first production diesel in 1937 while sporting unique looks that won the hearts of American railfans. continue reading

SD70ACe Diesel Locomotive - The SD70ACe is Electro-Motive Division's hope for the future. While designed to meet the Environmental Protection Agency's Tier-2 emissions requirements, the loco was also tasked to recapture EMD's lead in North American locomotive sales it lost to General Electric.   continue reading 40' AAR Box Car & Matching 6-Car Sets  - The 40' steel box car so familiar to model railroaders was a product of the 1930s. Wood box cars, which were built into the World War I era, and early steel cars were largely non-standardized, with details varying from railroad to railroad. continue reading

Tank Car - Until the 1950s, the typical railroad tank car consisted of a tank strapped to a full underframe, similar to the frames of most other cars, and the maximum capacity was about 12,000 gallons. But in the second half of the century, tank cars underwent a fundamental change as the tank itself took on the dual role of carrying the load and supporting the car.

"The largest and most powerful model locomotive ever built," proclaimed the 1931 catalog that introduced the 400E. Lionel spared no hyperbole in announcing its new steam engine: "Never before in the history of model train building has such a powerful locomotive been offered the American boy. This new 400E is the master of them all — a veritable giant of the rails.

"In its creation, Lionel engineers have faithfully reproduced in steel, copper, brass and nickel, all of those fine and minute details that are found only in the largest, most modern railroad engines. Its long, low lines, its beauty of color and design and its mechanical precision opens the door for every boy to greater fun and enjoyment."
