Alco RS-1 Diesel Locomotive  - The American Locomotive Company pioneered the multi-purpose "road switcher" design in 1941 with its 1000 hp RS-1. Alco's designers added a second, shorter hood to a basic switcher to make room for a steam boiler for passenger train heat. The short hood also afforded the crew additional accident protection. Smoother-riding trucks made the RS-1 suitable for the higher road speeds that would be daunting in a typical switcher. Although EMD's later GP7 and GP9 sold better and really established the road switcher as a universal locomotive, the RS-1 had the longest production run of any American-made diesel. The last new RS-1 left Alco's shops in 1960.continue reading

3-Dome Tank Car - Three-dome tank cars were actually three complete tanks on a single car body. Each tank had its own end bulkheads and expansion dome. Since older tank cars were filled to the top of the tank to prevent fluids from sloshing around during shipment (which could make the car unsteady), the domes provided space for the cargo to expand when the sun heated the tank. Because the additional bulkheads and domes added weight, multiple-dome cars had a smaller capacity than single-dome cars.                    continue reading Bunk Car - Box-type cars such as boxcars, reefers and cattle cars are often referred to as "house cars" because of their shape. But the term is especially appropriate for this bunk car, which serves as sleeping quarters for maintenance-of-way (MOW) and wreck train crews out on the road. Like many of the cars in MOW or wreck service, it's recycled from an older freight car that was no longer fit — or legal — for interchange service with other railroads.  continue reading

Ore Car - Why are ore cars so short? Because the iron ore they carry is considerably heavier than typical hopper loads like coal, so a short car of ore fills the load capacity of its trucks. Ore cars, also called "jennies," were and still are a common sight in the Iron Range region of Minnesota and nearby states, where they shuttle between mines and Great Lakes ports.                    continue reading Rounded Roof Box Car - High quality, traditionally sized RailKing Freight Cars provide detailed bodies and colorful paint schemes for the O Gauge railroader. MTH makes an enormous variety of RailKing Freight Cars, including many different car types and roadnames. No matter what era or part of the country you are modeling, RailKing is sure to have something for you. continue reading

A thing of beauty and a joy forever", the No. 6 steam locomotive made its debut in Lionel's 1906 catalog as the most perfect miniature model ever placed on sale. Built along the lines of the newest powerful express passenger locomotives, the No. 6 featured a 4-0-4 wheel arrangement-known as the American. Since this arrangement was widespread at the beginning of the 20th century, Lionel, not surprisingly chose to base their toys off of this popular model.

Built with the same care as the No. 5, these locomotives were equipped with a 4-wheel pilot truck, electric headlight, and reinforced phosphor bronze bearings. These features made for a durable outfit that would last indefinitely. Lionel earnestly recommended these locomotives "for those desiring a piece for a show window display, or for the added attraction to a showroom, or for a toy that is incomparable and will be appreciated all the time". Proving that a Lionel locomotive crossed over all boarders of model railroading enthusiasts. From the experienced show room owner, to the seller, to the child themselves these versatile locomotives were featured in the catalog until 1923.

Be at the forefront of American ingenuity in model railroading with the No. 6 Lionel Corporation steam locomotives. Paired with a 3-piece Pullman car set, including baggage and observation car, this set comes richly enameled and striped with gold lettering. Metal wheels and axles, overhead interior lighting, colorful, attractive paint schemes, detailed car interiors, baked enamel finish, stamped steel bodies and chassis's, and operating latch couplers, bring these cars into the 21st century while still maintaining the look and feel of the original. Operators looking for a more modern feel may find the contemporary version of this locomotive, featuring Proto-Sound 3.0, more appealing. However, for those who prefer the more traditional features these locomotives, we also offer the standard Bild-a-Loco Motor and stamped metal chassis that have become synonymous with Lionel.

Each locomotive is complemented with a 3-Car Std. Gauge Pullman Passenger Set. Introduced in 1924 and remaining in production until 1934, the original 710 Series Passenger Cars were big, measuring 11 1/2 inches long and 4 1/4 inches high. Typically, these cars were considered top-of-the-line passenger cars every year they were produced.
