December 17, 2024 - M.T.H. Electric Trains has announced an exclusive and uncataloged Premier Line O Scale Flat Car w/(2) PUP Trailers in Detroit & Mackinac livery. Available in limited quantities, the cars will be available in two car numbers and exclusively offered by the Northern Michigan Railroad Club. They are slated to arrive in February 2025.

ABOUT THE PREMIER O SCALE FLAT CAR WITH PUP TRAILERS

To facilitate rapid delivery of truck shipments to distant points, the Detroit and Mackinac Railway was one of America's first railroads to pioneer the "piggy back" transport system, combining the best of highway and rail shipping methods. This unique service was extended to the movement of mobile homes, once manufactured in northern Michigan.

Originally a large number of trailers were railroad-owned, and loading and unloading was done "circus-style" by driving the trailers onto a string of flatcars from one end. A major advance came in the 1960s with the advent of the first side-lift cranes, dramatically speeding up loading and unloading. Today the combination of trailer and container shipments, known collectively as intermodal, constitutes the largest class of freight on American railroads.
