Item No. 20-91662 Florida East Coast Extended Vision Caboose ABOUT THE EXTENDED VISION CABOOSE Before railroads, "caboose" referred to a small cookhouse on the deck of a sailing ship. Nobody knows for sure, but it was likely the 1850s before the first railroad caboose gave a train crew shelter from the weather. The Civil War-era marked the emergence of boxcar like cabin cars or conductor’s cars with side and perhaps end doors, windows, a heating and cooking stove, bunks, and roof lanterns to mark the end of the train. Management often resisted providing such creature comforts to crews, and it would be well into the 1870s before cabooses were widespread on American trains. And although the cupola, known then as a "lookout" or "observatory," first appeared during the Civil War era, flat-roofed cabooses outnumbered cabin cars with cupolas well into the 1880s. By the early 20th century, however, the cupola caboose had attained its final shape, one it would keep until cabooses became extinct in the 1980s. Item No. 20-92181 Florida East Coast 6-Car Rapid Discharge Hopper Set Item No. 20-92182 Florida East Coast 6-Car Rapid Discharge Hopper Set ABOUT THE RAPID DISCHARGE HOPPER Pioneered by the Ortner Freight Car Company, the rapid-discharge door system was developed in the early 1960s to facilitate quick unloading of aggregate hopper cars. The 60-degree slopes sheets provide for a fast clean unloading of commodities like sand and gravel without using a car shaker. These cars have long platforms on the ends and a relatively short car body which can be problematic when loading in motion with the Usibelli tipple and other gravel terminals. In fact, misloads easily occur if the loading process starts early or ends late, resulting in spilled material on the end platforms. The benefits of fast Unloading help compensate for slow loads at the other end. As a result, a train of rapid discharge cars takes 30 minutes to an hour to unload as opposed to four hours or longer for other unloading systems. Ready-to-Roll |
