U25B Diesel Engine - By 1960, EMD — the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors — looked like the clear winner in the race to dieselize America. ALCo was running a distant second, Baldwin was gone, and Fairbanks-Morse was on life support. General Electric, having dissolved its partnership with ALCo in 1953, had seemingly settled into a secondary role as a supplier of electrical gear to other manufacturers and builder of small export locomotives.

U.P. Spirit Bay Window Caboose - On October 19, 2017, the Union Pacific Railroad revealed a commemorative locomotive honoring the U.S. Armed Forces at San Antonio's Sunset Station. UP's No. 1943 kicked off the railroads Salute to the Military Tour with a series of community displays across Union Pacific's network. This uniquely decorated Bay Window Caboose matches the SD70ACe locomotive decor and is part of M.T.H.'s recreation of the Spirit program.  continue reading

75’ AutoTrain Auto Carrier - Virtually every sturdy car is offered in two car numbers which make it even easier than ever to combine them into a multi-car consist. Many of MTH’s Premier Rolling Stock offerings can also operate on the tightest O Gauge curves giving them even more added versatility to your layout.           continue reading

Funnel Flow Tank Car - Until the 1950s, the typical railroad tank car consisted of a tank strapped to a full underframe, similar to the frames of most other cars, and the maximum capacity was about 12,000 gallons. But in the second half of the century, tank cars underwent a fundamental change as the tank itself took on the dual role of carrying the load and supporting the car. "Frameless" or stub-sill tank cars became the norm, featuring larger-capacity tanks and just a stub frame at each end for attaching the trucks.

4-Bay Hopper Car -This car is likely the last hurrah of the bottom unloading coal hopper. Its prototype was built largely in the 1960s and ‘70s, just before the destinations for these cars — mainly utility power plants and harbor side shipping facilities — began switching to rotary unloading. While many of these cars survive in service today, newer coal cars are technically not hoppers at all. With trough-like bottoms and no hopper doors, they’re actually high-sided gondolas designed solely for rotary unloading.

RailKing One Gauge G Scale Dash-8 Diesel Engines Now In-Stock

Check Out The Quick Start Video

September 18, 2018 - In the late 1980s, as General Electric and General Motors’ Electro-Motive Division engaged in heated competition (that continues today) for market share in the high horsepower category, GE announced its Dash 8 line of diesel locomotives.

Although the first demonstrator version had only 3,200 hp, most of the Dash 8s had 4,000 hp when delivered and were therefore designated Dash 8-40. Because GE builds its diesel locomotives in five modules, it was able to customize its Dash 8s for each buyer to an unusual degree.

Some railroads ordered their Dash 8s with conventional cabs, while others opted for the wider North American or comfort cabs, identified by a "W" in the engine name. Some Dash 8s have 4-wheel trucks — denoted with a "B" — while a Dash 8-40C has 6-wheel trucks. This variety meant that these diesels, which were designed for fast freight duty, also found a home in Amtrak passenger service. Despite their many differences, all Dash 8s share microprocessor control. The microprocessor, a small computer, regulates rpm, fuel injection volume, generator excitation, and many other operational features to make the Dash 8s run more efficiently than any diesels before them.

Product Spotlight: Std. Gauge 390E Locomotives Released

September 19, 2018 - M.T.H. Electric Trains has released the Lionel Corporation Tinplate Std. Gauge 390E locomotive in six different exciting paint schemes. Each Proto-Sound 3.0 equipped locomotive is available at the suggested retail price of $649.95 each!

In 1929, steam engines reappeared in the Lionel standard gauge lineup after a six-year absence. The new 390 steamer and its smaller sibling, the 384, were available with manual reverse or as higher-priced "E" models with electronic reverse. Among the many paint schemes offered for the 390 was the original Blue Comet two-tone blue with cream stripe, based on the Central of New Jersey luxury train inaugurated earlier the same year. The 390 was offered with matching 300-series passenger cars as well as the larger 420-series Blue Comet cars. Within a few years, however, the 390 would cede its position at the top of the lineup to the massive 400E that, pulling the same 420-series Blue Comet cars, would become a toy train legend.

Lionel Corporation Tinplate returns the 390E in several exciting paint schemes and outfitted with modern Proto-Sound 3.0 electronics with sound, cruise control, and synchronized puffing smoke.
