ABOUT THE USRA DOUBLE SHEATHED BOXCAR

At midnight on Monday, December 31, 1917, the federal government took control of the U.S. railroad system. Acting under wartime powers granted to him by Congress, President Woodrow Wilson had nationalized the railroads when they proved unequal to the task of moving massive amounts of men and materiel for the Great War in Europe. Although hostilities would end in 11 months, government control would last until 1920. The agency that ran the trains was the United States Railroad Administration or USRA, and one of its chief accomplishments was the building of nearly 100,000 freight cars of five standard designs, to relieve equipment shortages.

2021 Premier O Scale GP-7 and 9 Diesel Locomotives Released

February 16, 2022 - M.T.H. Electric Trains has released the Premier O Scale GP-7 and 9 Diesel Locomotives in four popular liveries announced during the Summer of 2021. These very limited locomotive releases, each available in two different cab numbers, are only available through M.T.H. Authorized Retailers or directly from PrimeMOVER Communications. Check them out in the video to the left.

Electro-Motive Division's GP (for "General Purpose") engines were the brainchild of project engineer Dick Dilworth. In the late 1940s, Dilworth saw that America's 30,000 miles of mainline rail had been virtually dieselized, but the 130,000 miles of secondary lines that carried half of the nation's freight traffic were still largely steam-powered. He viewed that as a huge marketing opportunity.
