Monthly 2019 Vol. 2 Catalog Premier Spotlight

November 20, 2019 - Each month throughout the year, M.T.H. will be spotlighting various items from our 2019 O Gauge Volume 2 catalogs.  This month's feature will focus on the Premier O Scale EMD GP38-2 Diesel; the EMD E-8 Diesel Locomotive and E-8 Diesel Passenger Train in EMD, New York Central, Pennsylvania and Santa Fe paint schemes; and select Premier Freight Cars including the O Scale Bay Window Caboose; 40' Steel Reefer; Flat Cars with 20' PUP Trailers; and the PS-2CD High-Sided Hopper Car.  Each of these items is currently slated to begin delivering in January 2020.

EMD GP38-2 Diesel - Produced from 1972 to 1986, the GP38-2 helped inaugurate Electro-Motive’s "Dash-2" series of locomotives and became one of EMD’s all-time best sellers. With over 2200 engines sold throughout North America, rare was the railroad that did not roster these reliable, second-generation EMD workhorses.

EMD E-8 Diesel - In the mid-1930’s, as the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors was trying to interest railroads in diesel passenger power, there was a lot of experimentation in exterior design. One look at EMD’s yellow and brown UP M-10000 or its stainless steel Zephyr and it’s apparent that new looks were afoot.

EMD E-8 Passenger Train - The first generation of road diesels found its form in 1937 when the initial E-units, built for the B&O, inaugurated the classic "covered wagon" cab unit design that would last for two decades on both freight and passenger diesels.

New York Central E-8 Passenger Train - The earliest E-units were each virtually custom-made, with less than 20 units produced through the E5. The prewar E6 was the first mass-produced passenger diesel and the last to sport the rakish, streamlined EMD nose.

Pennsylvania E-8 Passenger Train - After the war, the new E7 adopted the "bulldog" nose introduced earlier on the FT freight diesel. With the rollout of the E8 in 1949, the E-unit, America’s most popular passenger diesel, reached its final visual form.

Santa Fe E-8 Passenger Train - With twin motors to ensure reliability and six-wheel trucks that rode like a Cadillac, the E8 was an engineer’s dream. For hoggers who had not long ago worked in steam locomotives, the clean cab of an E-unit was not hard to like.

Bay Window Caboose - As freight cars grew taller, observing a train from the cupola of a caboose became increasingly difficult. In the wooden car era, another problem with cupola cabooses was sagging roofs.

40' Steel Reefer - MTH Premier O Scale freight cars are the perfect complement to any manufacturer’s scale proportioned O Gauge locomotives. Purchase cars separately or assemble a unit train.

Flat Car w/PUP Trailers - The trailer-on-flat-car, or TOFC, concept actually predates the trucking industry. For a brief period in the 1800s, Long Island farmers could ship their loaded wagons to market on a local railroad.
PS-2CD High-Sided Hopper - Although covered hoppers had achieved widespread use by the 1950s, it wasn’t until the following decade that they began to carry North America’s grain harvest. Prior, U.S. and Canadian farmers shipped in 40’ boxcars.

Rebuilt Steel Boxcar - During and after World War I, American railroads took delivery of tens of thousands of boxcars built to USRA designs: single or double-sheathed wooden sides, wooden doors, and steel ends, roofs and underframes. By the late 1920s, however, all-steel cars had become the norm, although new car construction slowed to a crawl during the Depression.   continue reading

Monthly RailKing 2019 One Gauge Catalog Product Spotlight

November 20, 2019 - Each month throughout the year, M.T.H. will be spotlighting various items from our RailKing One Gauge G Scale Catalog.  This week's feature will focus on the G Gauge 4-Bay Hopper Cars. Each of these items is currently slated to begin delivering in March 2020.

4-Bay Hopper Car - This car is likely the last hurrah of the bottom unloading coal hopper. Its prototype was built largely in the 1960s and ‘70s, just before the destinations for these cars — mainly utility power plants and harbor side shipping facilities — began switching to rotary unloading. While many of these cars survive in service today, newer coal cars are technically not hoppers at all. With trough-like bottoms and no hopper doors, they’re actually high-sided gondolas designed solely for rotary unloading.  continue reading

UP Powered by Our People SD70ACe Diesel - The SD70ACe is Electro-Motive Diesel's hope for the future. While designed to meet the Environmental Protection Agency's Tier-2 emissions requirements that took effect on January 1, 2005, this replacement for the SD70MAC also has a higher purpose: to recapture the lead in North American locomotive sales that EMD lost to General Electric in 1987. continue reading
