Monthly 2017 Vol. 1 Catalog RailKing Spotlight

February 22, 2017 - Each month throughout the coming months, M.T.H. will be spotlighting various items from our 2017 O Gauge Volume 1 catalog. This week's feature will focus on select RailKing O Gauge offerings including the Union Pacific 4-6-2 Forty-Niner steam locomotive and select RailKing rolling stock items including the 40' Box Car, 4-Bay Cylindrical Hopper and 19th Century Baggage Cabin Car. Each of these items are currently slated to begin delivering in April 2017.

4-6-2 Forty-Niner Steam Locomotive - Hauled between Chicago and San Francisco by the Chicago & North Western, Union Pacific, and Southern Pacific Railroads, the Forty Niner was a way to arrive at the Coast in style. Operating on a 49-hour schedule, the train featured its own dedicated air conditioned, streamlined, all-Pullman trainset, with valet and stewardess services as well as a shower and a barber shop. The entire train was finished in gunmetal grey, accented by black and gold striping above and below the windows.continue reading		40' Box Car  - The 40' steel box car so familiar to model railroaders was a product of the 1930s. Wood box cars, which were built into the World War I era, and early steel cars were largely non-standardized, with details varying from railroad to railroad. The move toward standardization began with American Railway Association (ARA) designs of 1923 and 1932. It culminated in the 1937 AAR boxcar, which was adopted by railroads from coast to coast and built in the tens of thousands.continue reading

4-Bay Cylindrical Hopper - Until the advent of the covered hopper, bulk commodities like grain and cement were packed in sacks and loaded into boxcars. Loading and unloading was a tedious, time-consuming affair. In the 1930s, a few railroads took the basic coal hopper design and added a roof with loading hatches, enabling bulk commodities to be loaded from the top and unloaded from the bottom. In 1953, Pullman-Standard's 70-ton PS-2 became the first mass-produced covered hopper to be widely owned by U.S. railroads.  continue reading		19th Century Baggage Cabin Car - Before railroads, "caboose" referred to a small cookhouse on the deck of a sailing ship. Nobody knows for sure, but it was likely the 1850s before the first railroad caboose gave a train crew shelter from the weather. The Civil War era marked the emergence of boxcar-like cabin cars or conductor's cars in the style of our model, with side and perhaps end doors, windows, a heating and cooking stove, bunks, and roof lanterns to mark the end of the train.  continue reading

M.T.H. Electric Trains has published its first smartphone and tablet app for controlling a DCS layout wirelessly to the Apple App Store and Google Play stores.

The App provides access to the M.T.H. website allowing visitors to quickly find the latest news, search for products, watch product videos and much, much more.

The app can also control a DCS layout from any smartphone or tablet when paired with a DCS Wi-Fi Interface Unit and DCS Track Interface Unit. Both iOS and Android versions are FREE with an option for in-app purchase upgrades.
