Monthly RailKing 2019 Volume 1 O Gauge Catalog Product Spotlight

December 18, 2018 - Each month throughout the year, M.T.H. will be spotlighting various items from our RailKing 2019 Volume 1 O Gauge Catalog.  This week's feature will focus on the RailKing N&W J Class Northern Steam locomotive; the MTA R-12 Subway Sets; and select RailKing rolling stock including the Gondola Car with Cover; and the American Crane Car and Tender. Each of these items is currently slated to begin delivering in February 2019.

N&W J Class Northern - A visit to the Norfolk & Western in the early 1950s was like a scene from Jurassic Park: prehistoric beasts romping in their natural mountain habitat. At a time when other roads were letting their remaining steam engines rot away and giving them minimal service in dirty, dingy, soon-to-close facilities, the N&W was still running a first-class steam operation and even building new power.  continue reading R-12 Subway Sets - On June 1, 1940, the City of New York acquired the two subway systems it didn’t already own — the IRT (Interborough Rapid Transit Co.) and the BMT (Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corp.) — and consolidated them with the city-owned IND (Independent Subway System). It was readily apparent that the city’s fleet of aging subway cars was desperately in need of replacement.         continue reading

Gondola Car w/Cover - On its customer Web site, the Union Pacific Railroad characterizes a gondola as an "extremely sturdy open design" for carrying "rugged unfinished commodities"; its "large flat interior design with side walls" is described as "more flexible than a flat car."                   continue reading American Crane Car - In the early days of railroading, the job of cleaning up a wreck was usually done by men and horses. The first steam wrecking crane, a relatively small affair with a 20-ton lifting capacity, appeared in 1883. Its maker, Industrial Works of Bay City Michigan, introduced a fully revolving model a decade later.           continue reading

On June 1, 1940, the City of New York acquired the two subway systems it didn't already own — the IRT (Interborough Rapid Transit Co.) and the BMT (Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corp.) — and consolidated them with the city-owned IND (Independent Subway System). It was readily apparent that the city's fleet of aging subway cars was desperately in need of replacement, and immediately after World War II, management began to develop a new car that would be standard throughout the system and incorporate the latest advances in subway design. This effort was complicated by the fact that portions of the IRT had tighter clearances than the IND and BMT, so all future designs would incorporate a shorter, narrower IRT version.

Delivered in a maroon paint scheme, the R-17s were repainted in the MTA's new blue and silver colors in the 1970s. A less-than-successful white scheme, intended to discourage taggers, followed in the 1980s. And just a few years before their retirement in 1988, 16 cars were painted in the "fox red" used on the Redbird cars, although the R-17s were never officially part of the Redbird fleet.
