March 17, 2021 - M.T.H. Electric Trains has announced that it has sold a selection of its Premier O Scale molds to Atlas as part of its continued divestiture of tooling assets in light of M.T.H. President Mike Wolf's retirement later this year.

The selection of models includes diesel locomotives, freight cars, and passenger cars from the Premier line. In addition, a number of O Scale accessories from the RailKing lineup are included. Like the January 2021 Scale Trains tooling purchase of M.T.H.'s HO and S Gauge lineups, the Atlas purchase is only for the tools and molds of the selected items.

Since the announcement last Spring that M.T.H. President Mike Wolf would be retiring and closing down M.T.H., Atlas becomes the second model railroading company to purchase some of the vast tooling assets M.T.H. developed over the past 41 years. According to Wolf, "Atlas' longtime presence in the model railroading marketplace makes them a great place for these exciting models to now call home. Their decision to continue producing locomotives with Proto-Sound 3.0 makes Atlas a great destination for M.T.H. fans who've long appreciated the value found in these models."

A few of the models included in the sale were previously promoted under the M.T.H. brand in either uncataloged announcements or the 2020 O Gauge catalogs but have yet to arrive on retailer shelves. Those models will still be produced in M.T.H. branded packaging and will be supported, like all previous M.T.H. releases, by the M.T.H. Authorized Service Center network.

ABOUT THE SW1500 DIESEL

The end-cab switcher was the advance guard of the diesel revolution, working its way onto Class 1 rosters before road diesels were even considered. Compared with the 0-6-0 and 0-8-0 steamers they replaced, the advantages of diesel switchers were obvious: near-instant start-up and shut down, compared with building a fire and later dumping the ashes; and 360-degree visibility in the chaos of the yards and industrial settings where switchers typically worked. From the engineer’s point of view, the new diesels were cleaner, safer, and easier to operate.

At 1500 horsepower, the SW1500 was the last and most powerful of EMD’s SW line of switchers, which traced its roots back to the SW1 of 1939 — when "S" stood for six hundred horsepower, "W" stood for welded frame, and the pre-GM company name was Electro-Motive Corporation. The SW 1500 and its 1000 hp sibling, the SW1000, were the first switchers delivered with EMD’s second-generation model 645 diesel motor. Visually, the only difference between the two was the second exhaust stack on the SW1500 for its 12-cylinder prime mover.

The RailKing Scale model accurately reproduces the rugged — for a switcher — look of the SW1500, and delivers the same versatility and dependability as its prototype. Dual pickup rollers on its detailed Flexicoil trucks make this model nearly stall-proof on any three-rail O gauge switches. Throttle down as low as three scale miles per hour to muscle a heavy cut of freight or passenger cars around your terminal — and maintain that speed as long as you wish, thanks to Proto-Speed Control and twin flywheel-equipped motors. Negotiate crowded industrial areas with curves as tight as O-27, or hustle down your mainline to the next town. Pick up and drop off cars wherever you like, with remotely activated front and rear Proto-Couplers. Our full-scale, fully-featured model of this EMD workhorse offers everything you could want in a handsome, hard-working locomotive.

March 17, 2021 - The M.T.H. G Gauge U.P. "Spirit of the Union Pacific" boxcars are in-stock and now shipping to M.T.H. Authorized Retailers. The cars are available in limited quantities at your local M.T.H. Authorized Retailer or directly from the M.T.H. website.

About the 40' Boxcar

With see-through roof walks, grab irons, and other separately added parts, this model is a detailed replica of the Pullman-Standard PS-1 boxcar. Pullman had been making freight cars for more than half a century when it hit a home run with the PS-1. Introduced in 1947, it set the standard for postwar American freight cars. What made the PS-1 a landmark was its welded construction — an area in which Pullman led the industry. In addition to the lighter weight, welding offered superior strength and better resistance to weather and corrosion than contemporary riveted cars.

Like the EMD diesels that became ubiquitous on American railroads, the PS-1 was part of the postwar shift away from customized, railroad-specific locos and cars toward standardized designs produced in large quantities on efficient assembly lines. No wonder the PS-1 was soon followed by the highly successful PS-2 covered hopper, PS-3 open hopper, PS-4 flatcar, and PS-5 gondola.

At last 1:32 modelers can enjoy detailed scale rolling stock built to last. We’ve heard the clamoring for this type of equipment and RailKing One-Gauge is proud to deliver. As always, M.T.H. works hard to satisfy the needs of our customers and we’re confident that you’ll find the value in our rolling stock to be unmatched by others and worthy additions to your one gauge roster.

Each car’s standard features are often extras on other manufacturer’s cars. Only M.T.H. gives you stainless steel wheels and axles, two types of couplers, and polycarbonate bodies for indoor and outdoor use as standard equipment.

These cars are still available to order from your local M.T.H. Authorized Retailer. They can also be ordered directly from M.T.H. by visiting the M.T.H. website.
