Coronavirus Update From M.T.H. Electric Trains

March 25, 2020 - As of March 23, 2020, at 5:00 PM, the governor of Maryland has deemed that all "non-essential" businesses in the state be closed until further notice to help combat the global effect of coronavirus (COVID-19). As a result of this executive order, M.T.H. Electric Trains has shut down operations in our Columbia, Maryland office and is running on a limited, remote basis.

What Does This Mean?

Because our main facility is shut down, employees who can work remotely are doing so. Other employees have been told to stay home to remain in compliance with the governor's order.

What We Are Doing:

  • Answering The Phone For Sales, MTHRRC Inquiries and Customer Service
  • Responding To Customer Contacts From The Website Contact Form
  • Receiving US Mail and Processing Accounts Receivables
  • Receiving Online In-Stock Orders
  • Managing Overseas Production
  • Limited Product Shipping

What We Are NOT Doing:

  • Product Repairs
  • Technician Support
  • Accepting Walk-in Customer or Dealer Visits at M.T.H. Headquarters

Because our staffing is remotely located and thinner than normal, phone support will be limited and wait times longer than usual. We appreciate your patience.

Alco RS-3 Diesel Locomotive - By the time the first RS-3's rolled off the assembly line in 1950, Alco had refined its road switcher concept to create "a truly universal locomotive which could do anything and go almost anywhere," in the words of author J.W. Swanson in New Haven Power. In contrast with its predecessor, the 1000 hp RS-1, the 1600 hp RS-3 had all the power of a road diesel of its time and could boil along at up to 80 mph.  continue reading

40' High Cube Box Car - With an interior height of about 13 feet — 2 feet more than a standard boxcar — this car is known as a "hi-roof" or "high cube" car for its high cubic capacity. White end panels make railroad crews aware of its extra height, which prevents it from traveling in some areas.   continue reading 50' Modern Box Car - Our 50’ modern boxcar is modeled on the fleet of cars originally built for Railbox service in the 1970s and early 1980s. Formed in 1974 as a subsidiary of Trailer Train Company (now TTX Company), Railbox did for box cars what Trailer Train had done earlier for piggybacking.  continue reading

Standard Tank Car - The tank car was relatively uncommon until the 1870s when the nascent petroleum industry ordered large quantities of metal tanks carried on wooden car bodies. By the early 1900s, a standard design had evolved that lasted throughout the steam and early diesel eras: an 8,000-11,000 gallon metal tank perched on a metal flatcar-like underframe.   continue reading Flat Car w/40' Trailer - The trailer-on-flat-car, or TOFC, concept actually predates the trucking industry. From 1885-1893, Long Island farmers could ship their loaded wagons to Manhattan markets on Long Island Rail Road flatcars. Teamsters rode in their own coach on the farmers’ specials, while their horses traveled in stable cars.   continue reading
